Australia Myanmar Institute Director and Professor Monique Skidmore says Australian economist Sean Turnell is “caught up in a pawn” to oust Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong called for the “immediate release” of Mr Turnell sentenced to jail in Myanmar in a press conference on Friday.
“As advisor to Aung San Suu Kyi, he was making suggestions and analyses that were at odds with the powerful military companies that controlled the economy,” Professor Skidmore told Sky News Australia.
“But like the other people who were caught up in this, he is also a part of a pawn in an attempt to get rid of Aung San Suu Kyi in the national lead for democracy.”
