A 30-mile stretch of British coast is subject to a fresh flood alert as “potentially heavy and thundery” downpours are on their way – at the end of a wet August
Brits are set for another washout Wednesday with forecasters warning of heavy rain for some regions as flood alerts have been issued.
A 30-mile stretch of British coast is subject to a fresh flood alert as “potentially heavy and thundery” downpours are on their way – at the end of a wet August. Areas along the coast in Cumbria – between Silloth in the north and Saint Bees in the south – have been warned to prepare for flooding from the Irish Sea.
Residents on the stretch of coast, which is around 30 miles, should monitor local water levels and weather conditions, and avoid using low-lying footpaths. The patch is at the top of the Irish Sea and part of the Channel of the River Esk and the River Eden’s estuary, both of which run into the sea from the north of the county near Carlisle.
Meanwhile, in its forecast for today the Met Office has said that there will be some heavy downpours but that some regions will see sunshine with warmer temperatures for many. The environment agency has issued two flood alerts saying that flooding is possible for the coast between Silloth in the north and Saint Bees, as well as the Tyne and Wear coast.
But looking ahead forecasters have predicted an improved outlook by the weekend. Clare Nasir of the Met Office said: “You can see here that ridge extends down from the south through Friday and into Saturday. The isobars open up, still a bit breezy across south coast there.
“But even so, high pressure in charge for the weekend. So stay tuned for the forecast for the weekend because it looks a bit brighter as well as drier, more settled.”
