Prince Harry and Meghan Markle used the 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto to go public with their romance – and at the event’s closing ceremony, the pair were caught on camera indulging in a gesture they thought they had kept secret
After a long wait, fans will finally be able to watch Prince Harry’s latest Netflix project from today – and it’s likely to bring back some fond memories.
The eagerly anticipated Heart of Invictus documentary has landed on the streaming platform – and it focuses on a handful of competitors taking part in the Invictus Games – an event set up by Harry, which sees injured and sick military personnel and veterans take part in a Paralympic-style sporting competition.
Harry is its executive producer and the show forms part of the Sussexes’ multimillion-pound deal with Netflix – with their main output so far being last year’s controversial Harry & Meghan documentary. And maybe if Harry and Meghan Markle settle down to watch the show today, it will cast their minds back to happy memories.
Six years ago, in 2017, the pair went public with their relationship when the Games were held Toronto. They held hands as they popped along to a tennis event in the Canadian city, where Meghan was living at the time filming the hit TV show Suits.
The pair were said to be delighted with their first public appearance, which made headlines across the world. A royal source said at the time: “It was a calm fun atmosphere for the competitors and their families which was the most important thing.”
The pair clearly enjoyed their first Invictus experience together as later that week they were spotted enjoying the closing ceremony together. And they got swept away in the emotion of the event as cameras picked up on them sharing a secret kiss.
It came as the couple watched Bruce Springsteen sing his classic hit Dancing In The Dark from an executive box at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. Harry seemingly forgot the cameras for a moment as he planted a kiss on Meghan’s cheek. as they enjoyed the performance.
And it seems the couple’s relationship with Invictus is set to continue as Meghan will join her husband at the Games being staged in Germany next month, a spokesperson for the couple has confirmed. Meghan is expected to miss the opening ceremony of the sporting event for wounded military personnel and veterans being staged in Dusseldorf from September 9 over eight days.
But she will fly to Europe and join husband Harry shortly after the event – which will see participants from across the globe taking part – begins. Before the Invictus Games get under way, Harry will travel to the UK to attend a charity’s awards ceremony on the eve of the first anniversary of the late Queen’s death.
Harry will celebrate the achievements and resilience of seriously ill youngsters and their families supported by the charity WellChild, at the event being staged in London on September 7.
A spokesperson for the couple said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to attend the Invictus Games 2023 in Dusseldorf. The Duke will be in attendance throughout the entirety of the games and will be joined by the Duchess shortly after the games begin.”
