Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce says he believes an inharmonious Indo-Pacific region serves “no one”.
“Everybody becomes poorer,” he told Sky News Australia on Friday.
“It’s a bad outcome all around.”
It comes as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to visit China in November amid escalating tensions involving Taiwan and in the South China Sea.
Mr Albanese just finished up a four-day visit to the United States where he discussed the AUKUS pact with President Joe Biden.
He told senior US officials during his trip Australia remains “clear eyed” about the realities of dealing with China.
