Police Scotland have confirmed two men, both aged 34, have been charged with assault after video footage showed a heckler who called Prince Andrew “a sick man” during the Queen’s coffin procession in Edinburgh
Two men have been charged with assault after allegedly tackling a heckler who shouted at Prince Andrew during the Queen’s coffin procession.
Police Scotland launched an investigation after crowd members were filmed pinning the protestor to the ground on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh on September 12.
The 22-year-old victim was removed from the scene by officers and subsequently charged with a breach-of-the-peace.
He is accused of saying to the Duke of York, 62: “Andrew, you’re a sick old man!” and then “disgusting”.
As he was dragged away he is also said to have shouted “I’ve done nothing wrong!”
He awaits a court date.
The force has now confirmed two other men, both aged 34, are due in court in connection with the assault.
A force spokeswoman said: “Two men, both 34, have been arrested and charged in connection with assault following an incident on the Royal Mile on September 12.
“A report will be sent for the consideration of the fiscal.”
Andrew was walking behind his late mother’s coffin with brothers King Charles and Prince Edward and sister Princess Anne as it was transported to St Giles’ Cathedral from the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
In a previous statement, the police said: “A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with a breach of the peace on the Royal Mile around 2.50pm on Monday, 12 September 2022.
“He was released on an undertaking to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
Another anti-monarchy protester was also led away by police after holding up a placard saying ‘not my King’ while King Charles addressed parliament.
Further arrests were made in the Scottish capital, including after a woman, 22, held up a poster saying “F*** Imperialism, Abolish Monarchy”.
She was charged with a breach of the peace.
The arrests caused uproar and led many to claim that their right to freedom of speech is under threat.
