Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Friday, dealing a crushing blow to its playoff and Super Bowl hopes.
The 26-year-old Ohio native, who led the Bengals to the 2022 Super Bowl and last season’s AFC title game, tore a ligament in his wrist that will likely require surgery, Cincinnati coach Zac Taylor said.
Burrow left Thursday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens in the second quarter and didn’t come back.
Burrow recalled landing on the wrist and throwing a touchdown pass before realizing something was wrong.
“I just felt a pop in the middle of the throw, tried to give it a go and couldn’t get it done,” he told reporters on Friday. “After the game, (I) kind of had a feeling before we got the official news.”
The Bengals are 5-5 and were on the edge of the NFL playoff picture. Cincinnati next plays a week from Sunday against the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers.
“We’re going to continue to grind it out,” Burrow said. “It’s a tough season, it’s a long season, but we got the guys to continue to win games and make the playoffs.”
Jake Browning, who came in for Burrow on Thursday night, is now the team’s starting QB.
